Why having biblical affirmations is a good idea

In high school, I went to a weekend retreat and on the last day everyone wrote positive affirmations to each other. They said things like, “You are the strongest person I know” or “You have a great personality – Never change!” The purpose was to have a bunch of little notes that you could look at when you were having a bad day. I kept these affirmations for awhile, and pulled them out every so often for encouragement. While I no longer have these notes, I remember how reading them made me feel instantly better. Now, I have a list of biblical affirmations that I reference on the daily and these make me feel even better than the affirmations I received back at the retreat.

Biblical affirmations are verses or passages from the Bible that you memorize, align your life with, and reference when you need to press reset. I encourage you to look through the Bible and find a few passages that become your biblical affirmations; Words from God that you store in your heart and pull out when you need support, encouragement, or realignment.

Here are five reasons why having biblical affirmations is a good idea.

1. Biblical affirmations come directly from God. The affirmations you find within scripture are God’s personal words to you. This means that they are more powerful than any other affirmation. Nothing is sweeter than receiving encouragement and support from your creator, protector, and Heavenly Father.

2. Having biblical affirmations helps form the habit of memorizing bible verses – Which DOES make a difference! For a long time, I didn’t focus of memorizing bible verses because I thought, “I have access to the bible all the time, so I don’t need to memorize verses. I can just look them up when I want to reference them.” READ: Hello, I was LAZY!! But I’ve since found that memorizing verses is so good for my soul and my life. Now that I have many of my Biblical affirmations stored in my memory and can access them at anytime, my everyday life is aligning more and more with the life God has for me. When I have God’s word in my mind, I feel lighter; I’m less angry, I’m more patient, I’m less anxious, I’m more at peace, I see the best in people even when they aren’t kind, and I feel God’s love SO close to me. This is the life God wants for you and me! Once you have your affirmations memorized, you can work on memorizing other scriptures because you’ll realize that you CAN memorize verses and doing so DOES make a difference.

3. It’s an easy way to start your day in the Word. My ideal morning includes waking up, brewing a cup of coffee, and sitting down with my Bible to read a few chapters and be in the presence of God’s word. But let’s be honest, this doesn’t always happen. By having biblical affirmations stored in my memory and heart, I can start the day in God’s word even when I don’t have time to physically get my Bible out to read it. Nothing sets the tone for the day better than having God’s words running through your mind and heart, and having biblical affirmations makes that possible!!

4. They are great go to’s when you don’t know what to read. Sometimes it can be daunting to spend time in the Bible because you don’t know where to start. You want to read it, and you want to learn, but having to decide what books and passages to read can cause you to not read at all. If you take the time to figure out what affirmations from the Bible you want to memorize, these verses or passages will be a GREAT go to’s when you aren’t sure what to read. You can never reread verses enough!

5. You can use your biblical affirmations as reference points throughout your day. At any point in the day, you might need to press reset. Maybe you’re tired, stressed, feeling burnt out, or overwhelmed. Thinking of your biblical affirmations will help you realign your thoughts, mood, actions, and words and move you closer to the person you set out to be that morning.

My prayer for you right now is that you will dig through scripture and find your own biblical affirmations to store in your mind and heart. I pray that God leads you to the words He has for you. I pray that once you find God’s affirmations to you and you treasure them in your heart, they will change the way you live. I pray they will take some weight off your shoulders and lead you into living a more joy-filled and peaceful life; The life that God has for you!
